El Niño–Southern Oscillation signal in a new East Antarctic ice core, Mount Brown South

چکیده
Abstract. Paleoclimate archives, such as high-resolution ice core records, provide a means to investigate past climate variability. Until recently, the Law Dome (Dome Summit South site) record remained one of few millennial-length coastal records in East Antarctica. A new drilled 2017/2018 at Mount Brown South, approximately 1000 km west Dome, provides an additional that will likely span last millennium Indian Ocean sector Here, we compare snow accumulation rates and sea salt concentrations upper portion (∼ 20 m) three cores updated over period 1975–2016. Annual from site preserve stronger signal for El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO; austral winter spring, r = 0.533, p < 0.001, Multivariate Niño Index) compared previously defined summer (November–February, 0.398, 0.010, Southern Index). The inverse signals ENSO, possibly due longitudinal variability meridional transport southern Ocean, although further analysis is needed confirm this. We suggest ENSO-related surface temperature anomalies equatorial Pacific drive atmospheric teleconnections mid-latitudes. These are associated with weakening (strengthening) regional westerly winds north correspond years low (high) deposition during La Niña (El Niño) events. extended annual (when complete) may offer proxy reconstructions ENSO recent millennium, along improved understanding addition derived Dome.

Interannual variations in Antarctic precipitation related to El NioSouthern Oscillation
The accurate estimation of Antarctic precipitation variability is an essential component in understanding lobal sea level fluctuations; direct measurement techniques, however, are replete with practical difficulties. In this study, net precipitation (precipitation minus sublimation) for the Antarctic continent is computed for 1980-1994 using operational numerical analyses obtained from the ECMW...
متن کاملRecent climate tendencies on an East Antarctic ice shelf inferred from a shallow firn core network
Nearly three decades of stable isotope ratios and surface mass balance (SMB) data from eight shallow firn cores retrieved at Fimbul Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, in the Austral summers 2009-2011 have been investigated. An additional longer core drilled in 2000/2001 extends the series back to the early eighteenth century. Isotope ratios and SMB from the stacked record of all cores were also relate...
متن کاملEast Antarctic ice core sulfur isotope measurements over a complete glacial-interglacial cycle
[1] Both sulfur and oxygen isotopes of sulfate preserved in ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica have provided information on the relative sources of sulfate in the ice and their chemical transformation pathways in the atmosphere over various time periods. The mass-independent fractionation in the oxygen isotopes of sulfate from the Vostok ice core from east Antarctica suggests that gas-phas...

متن کاملWindblown Pliocene diatoms and East Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat
Marine diatoms in tillites along the Transantarctic Mountains (TAMs) have been used to suggest a diminished East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) during Pliocene warm periods. Updated ice-sheet modelling shows significant Pliocene EAIS retreat, creating marine embayments into the Wilkes and Aurora basins that were conducive to high diatom productivity and rapid accumulation of diatomaceous sediments....
